Circular Economy is an alternative approach to the traditional linear Economy (make, use, dispose) Imagine a closed circle that starts and ends with mother nature. Circular economy aims to redesign processes of making a product using a cradle-to-cradle approach. This is when a design process aims to repurpose any raw materials used to make a product or is broken down into a biodegradable fibre after its use.
So how does circular economy function when applied to the fashion industry?
There are three main pillars, People, Profit, and Planet.
People
Any farmers, artisans, workers, designer and maker involved in the process of making a fashion garment must benefit from their labour with all ethical rights protected. Consumer behaviour towards using and recycling the product must be taken into consideration too.
Profit
No matter how big or small your business in the fashion and textiles industry is you are an important part of the closed circle of Circular Economy. Therefore, you must profit from the fashion products you sell by focusing on the quality of the products you offer your costumers. A long-lasting fashion garment is much more sought after than one that falls apart after one or two washes. Loved clothes last and equally loved brands last.
Planet
A fashion or textile product must be designed with its environmental impact at its focus. Using natural based fibres like organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, wool and silk as well as fruit-based fibres to make a fashion garment means at least 75% of the material can breakdown and biodegrade into the Earth`s clean soil with no damage caused. Any other materials such as recycled polyester that is not biodegradable must be reused and repurposed into another product.
