Answer - Mexico!
Athletes from Mexico wore uniforms incorporating artisan craftsmanship at the opening ceremony.
They wore embroidered floral motifs from Oaxaca, each handmade by Tehuana artisans from Isthmus. It was an amazing way to showcase the incredible talent in Mexico, give artisans deserved recognition & give traditional craft a modern sensibility.
I believe that artisan craft will shape the future of fashion. It's always been an integral part of the industry, what's missing is the recognition for the artisan & craft. In the luxury sector, much of the workmanship in a garment can be created by artisans in one country but the construction may be done somewhere like Italy & the label will say 'Made in Italy' with no mention or credit given to the artisan.
When co-creating brands need to recognise & credit artisans & their craft, they deserve dignity & respect; cultural appreciation as opposed to cultural appropriation! These art-forms take years to learn & master, passed from generation to generation, it's a celebration of tradition, culture & belief.
Every part of artisan craft tells a unique, beautiful story & the narrative in the fashion industry needs to change.
