I can vividly recall the moment I saw this statement on the website of a Foundation I came across whilst carrying out a piece of research. I was deeply moved by their work; it resonated on many levels. They are a Foundation made up of women who work with communities of women weavers for the purpose of creating sustainable ecosystems that alleviate poverty.
I emailed the Founder asking her if there was an opportunity for collaboration. Within three months I was on a plane to visit her and see the work they do with one of their weaving communities and to meet these incredible artisans.
Using traditional looms these women weave beautiful textiles. But the industry is dying out and younger generations see no benefit to being a weaver. As it stands many women have to leave their families to work overseas to provide; they are the breadwinner. Most end up as someone’s maid or working in the sex trade. There are times they return, abused, pregnant or both. Currently, there is no other choice.
But, there is hope.
In the area I visited, a weaver’s cooperative has been established. There is an increased demand for traditional hand woven textiles and this demand has led to many women being able to return from overseas and earn a living as a backstrap weaver. Coupled with local community based tourism this has led to economic power and created “agency” for the women weavers and their community.
